NHS funded home visits
Who is eligible for a free NHS home eye test?
NHS home eye tests are for patients who cannot attend a practice due to a physical or mental disability. These situations may include where a patient:
- Are frail or ill
- Have challenging behaviour
- Become distressed when taken out of familiar surroundings
Help with the cost of glasses
You are entitled to an NHS sight test, and may also get a voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses, if you:
- Are under 16, or under 19 and in full‑time education
- Have been prescribed complex lenses and are eligible for a 'complex lens voucher' (your optometrist can tell you more)
- Receive, or your partner receives, Income Support, income‑based Employment and Support Allowance or income‑based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Receive, or your partner receives, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Receive, or your partner receives, Universal Credit and meet the criteria on earnings limit
- Are a prisoner on leave from prison
- Have a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
- Have, or are named on, a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2). If you are named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3), you may also get help

A full clinical examination typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the tests required. We never rush — your comfort comes first.
What equipment do you bring?+
We bring portable versions of all the equipment found in a high‑street practice, including a tonometer for eye pressure and full trial frame set.
Do I need to prepare anything?+
Just a chair in good lighting and a list of any current medications. We'll handle the rest — including rearranging if you have a carer present.
Which areas do you cover?+
We cover Thanet, Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury. Call us with your postcode and we'll happily confirm.
Can I keep my existing optician's records?+
Yes — with your permission we can request your records, and we'll always send a copy of your prescription wherever you'd like.
